Family Resource Programs

Family Resource Programs are parent/child interactive program for families with children 0 to 5 years. Parents and children attend together and typically find a range of programs and services to meet their needs. Family support, play based learning, literacy, parent education and information can be found at our family resource programs. There are other terms that may be used such as family drop-in, family place and Strong Start. The services are offered at no or low cost and are offered at convenient times and locations for families.

South Vancouver Family Place offered family drop-ins or family resource programs at 6 locations in South Vancouver. Many are now located in local schools and are funded by the Ministry of Education. They all offer a place for parents, caregivers and their children, birth to age to meet other families, for children to play and learn and for families to find a variety of supports. Some of the activities at drop-ins are story time, reading, arts and crafts, and outdoor play. Often parenting programs and other workshops are offered depending on location.

Parent Education and Early Childhood Literacy Programs

South Vancouver Family Place offers parent education and early literacy programs to assist parents in identifying the challenges of parenting and in developing skills to meet those challenges. Some of the on-going programs are Nobody’s Perfect, Mother Goose, Life As A Parent and Parent Mentoring Program.

Nobody’s Perfect

Nobody’s Perfect is a parenting program for parents with children aged 0 to five. The program’s goals are:

  • to help parents increase their knowledge and understanding of their children.
  • to effect positive change in their behaviour towards their children.
  • to increase their self-image and coping skills; and
  • to increase mutual support among the parents.

South Vancouver Family Place offers two to three six-week sessions per year. Please call 604-325-5213 for schedules.

Life As A Parent

Life As A Parent is a program that assist participants in identifying and developing their needs, strengths and obtainable goals and to acknowledge the significance of their achievements with the help of Facilitators. The participants will design an agenda to fit their needs and facilitator(s) will address these needs using an experiential, adult-centered approach. Some LAAP goals are:

  • dispel their isolation, have fun, and have ‘adult’ conversation
  • become informed of community resources – where and how to access them
  • receive encouragement and practical information on child development
  • experience a safe and pleasurable constant in their lives

Participants can expect to come away with practical tools, practical solutions, and new insights about parenting young children. This program is open to parents who have a basic command of spoken English and have children newborn to six years old and live in the South Vancouver area. The program runs for eights weeks with two-hour sessions once a week.

This program is funded by United Way, Success by Six and co-sponsored by South Vancouver Neighbourhood House.
